Harbour Town Light

(Hilton Head Island, South Carolina)

The Harbour Town Lighthouse was a privately financed lighthouse built in 1969-1970.  Although not a historic lighthouse, the tower is operational and is listed on U.S. Coast Guard maps. I have, therefore, included it in my screensaver and lighthouse description pages.

The lighthouse was built as a symbol of the Sea Pines Plantation on Hilton Head Island.  Conceived by Charles E. Fraiser, founder of Sea Pines Plantation, the idea of building a private lighthouse was initially thought to be senseless and the project was referred to as “Fraser’s Folly”.  However over time the lighthouse tower has become a highly recognized symbol of the plantation and adjacent Harbor Town golf course.

The tower stands 90 feet tall and has 110 stairs leading up to the lantern room.  The light uses a low-watt bulb, flashes every 2.5 seconds and can be seen up to approximately 15 miles. The tower is open to the public.  A gift shop is located at the top of the tower and an observation deck permits nice views of the surrounding marina.

Directions: Take US 278 to Hilton Head Island. Harbour Town is located within the Sea Pines Plantation at the end of Lighthouse Road.  A five-dollar entrance fee is required.
