Bass Harbor Head Light

(Mount Desert Island, Maine)

Bass Harbor Light, located within Acadia National Park on Mt. Desert Island.  It marks the entrance of Blue Hill Bay and Bass Harbor.

The lighthouse was built in 1858 on the southwestern point of Mount Desert Island. The lighthouse is constructed of brick and is 32-feet tall.  With the additional height of the cliffs, the light shines 56 feet above sea level.

The light was initially equipped with a fifth-order Fresnel lens.  In 1902 it was replaced with a fourth order lens. It currently emits a red light.  The light was automated in 1974.

The lighthouse is easily accessible, although the tower and keepers house is closed to the public. The keeper’s house serves as housing for Coast Guard personnel.  A path and stairway leads down to the beautiful rocks below the lighthouse.
